Deborah Judging Israel

The second panel in the History of Law series depicts Deborah.

Before the development of monarchies, judges were charismatic Hebrew leaders who reviewed disputes and made decisions. Deborah was a great judge who encouraged the Hebrews as they sought liberation from the Canaanites’ oppression. The panel shows the prophetess Deborah sitting under the Palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel, judging Israel. According to Professor Zabel, this panel reinforces the Mosaic covenant that God’s will protects his chosen people, but only if they obey His law.
